Uhuru Torch begins race in Mara region tomorrow

The Uhuru Torch, Tanzanias national symbol of freedom and hope since 1961, enters its race in Mara region tomorrow Friday from neighbouring Arusha region.

Mara Regional Commissioner Col Evans Mtambi, informed the media today that the national emblem depicting equality, integrity, respect for human dignity and peace, will be raced in all the region’s six districts and nine district councils.

This year, the Torch race carries the theme of environmental conservation and the local government elections for building the nations sustainable development.

RC Mtambi said during the nine-day race 72 projects worth nearly 25 billion shillings will be inspected, launched and inaugurated in various places before the Rorch is handed over to Simiyu region.

The projects are in such sectors as education, agriculture, infrastructure, water, health, livestock, environment, social welfare, industries and trade.

This years Torch race also marks the 60th anniversary of the union between Tanzania Mainland (formerly Tanganyika) and the Zanzibar archipelago.
