A primary school teacher is being held by the police allegedly for caning a 14-year female pupil and causing her death in Tarime District, Mara Region.
The deceased has been identified as Ghati Mataro Tembo , a standard five pupil.
The incident happened yesterday at Mangucha Primary School in Nyanungu ward, according to local leaders and reliable sources close to the school.
“It appears the teacher who has been nicknamed Chule, brutally caned the girl and caused her death,” local leaders living near the public school said.
Government officials in Tarime confirmed that the suspect was immediately arrested after the incident and is in police custody.
The new Regional Police Commander, ACP Michael Njera for Tarime /Rorya Special Police Zone, was not immediately available for comment.
