The twin agencies – TANROADS and TARURA – have been urged to cooperate in rehabilitating roads damaged by floods pending a major government infrastructure revamp exercise when the rains end.

Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa issued the directive yesterday after touring areas hit by floods in Morogoro and Coast regions to assess the damage and how government can assist the affected victims.

He appealed for calmness from people living in areas severely ravaged by the floods in the country as government draws concrete plans to help them.
The Prime Minister said that the government will not abandon its people in this hour of need, promising increased assistance until the situation normalises.

“I ask you to receive President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s heartfelt message on the tragedy caused by the floods as she recognises there are people who have lost their properties,” Majaliwa said at Chumbi ward in Rufiji district where 740 displaced persons have been camped.

He directed village leaders to move the flood victims to highland areas where they can be helped to build their new dwellings.

Apart from the destruction of human settlements, properties and roads, the current El Nino rains have also damaged many farms planted with food crops in many areas of the country.

To curb an impending hunger crisis in the flood affected areas, government has promised to provide fast-maturing seeds to farmers.
