Speaker of the Tanzania National Assembly, Dr Tulia Ackson, yesterday became the first woman to win the presidency of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in elections held in the Angolan capital, Luanda.

She won the IPU highest position by 172 votes out of 303 votes cast defeating her opponents to grab the prestigious seat in the global parliamentary body.

She replaces Duarte Pacheco of Portugal who was elected through online network in 2020 because of the ravages of Covid-19 pandemic.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan was jubilant upon hearing news of Dr Tulia’s election:” Dr Tulia, heartiest congratulations for being elected as IPU president.”
