Two world-famous Tanzanian national parks, Serengeti and Mt Kilimanjaro, yesterday received their prestigious awards at a lavish ceremony held at the Diamonds Leisure Beach & Golf Resort in Mombasa, Kenya.
The sumptuous event was organised by World Travel Awards, an agency established in 1993 to acknowledge, reward and celebrate excellence across all key sectors of the travel, tourism and hospitality industries.
For the sixth consecutive time, Serengeti National Park emerged “Africa’s Leading National Park 2024” while Africa’s rooftop, Mt Kilimanjaro, was named the “African Leading Tourist Attraction 2024.”

Announcing the winners, the founder of the World Travel Awards, Graham Cooke, said Serengeti National Park excelled over other parks such as Kenya’s Maasai Mara, South Africa’s Kruger, Central Kalahari of Botswana, Etosha of Namibia, and Kidepo Valley of Uganda, acording to a statement released by Tanzania National Parks yesterday.
He said Mt Kilimanjaro prevailed over other tourist attractions like Hartbeespoort aerial cableway, V & A Waterfront, Robben Island and Table Mountain — all of South Africa, Lake Malawi, Okavango Delta of Botswana and Pyramid of Giza of Egypt.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism responsible for toursm matters, Nkoba Mabula, received the awards. Other members of the Tanzania delegation at the ceremony included Tanzania Tourist Board Director-General, Ephraim Mafuru, a member of the Board of Trustees, Hadija Ramadhani, the Northern Zone Conservation Commander, Beatrice Lyimo, and the Head of the Serengeti National Park, Stephano Msumi.
Apart from Serengeti’s sixth consecutive win of the top award, Mt Kilimanjaro has also clinched the ‘African Leading Tourist Attraction” trophy six times.
