President Samia Suluhu Hassan has thanked her predecessors for being the architects of construction of the imposing State House complex, whose building progress she was able to oversee and preside over its inauguration at Chamwino area in Dodoma today.
Addressing a multitude of invited guests who included retired national leaders, government officials, dignitaries, members of the diplomatic corps and many others, the President said Tanzania’s history has recorded a landmark and every past President has had a tremendous contribution.
“ The building I’m inaugurating today is an indelible mark, resulting from a dream of the Father of the Nation Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere to move the capital city from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma. The journey has been a long one, spanning 50 years from 1973, during which many institutions moved to Dodoma, including Parliament, the ruling party CCM headquarters, and government ministries and institutions.’’
President Samia acknowledged specifically the role played by the late President John Pombe Magufuli saying he made extra efforts from 2016 onwards to ensure the national seat moved to Dodoma, by expediting construction of government blocks and increasing the size of the State House area from 66 to 8,473 acres.
“ When I took over the presidency, I vowed to complete all projects started by my predecessor. This is the second project after the Tanzanite Bridge in Dar es Salaam,’’ said President Samia.
Giving brief remarks, Vice President Dr Phillip Mpango said the building is a pride of all Tanzanians because every aspect of it is Tanzanian, including contractors, designers, engineers, materials, labourers and even the funding which was drawn from tax payers’ money.
Speaking on behalf of retired leaders, former President Jakaya Kikwete showered praise on President Samia saying Tanzania’s history has been written with indelible ink, thanks to her incredible and great commitment that made it possible to attain high finishing standards of the State House building.
Apart from housing the offices of the Union President, Chamwino State House also accommodates offices of the Zanzibar President.
Construction of the State House complex started in 2020, with SUMA JKT as the main building contractors, teaming up with and Tanzania Building Agency(TBA).
Other state organs in the team are TANROADS, TPDC, DUWASA, TEMESA, TANESCO, and TTCL, among others.
