President Samia Suluhu Hassan yesterday led thousands of mourners who attended the burial of former Prime Minister Edward Lowassa who died on February 12.
The mourners at the late Lowassa’s native village of Ngarash included Zanzibar President Dr Hussein Mwinyi and senior government officials of both parts of the United Republic of Tanzania.
Paying homage to the departed ex-premier, President Samia said as a public figure or as a concerned citizen, Lowassa never stayed on the sidelines but plunged into and involved himself in a variety of activities with the tireless energy of a young person as a service to his countrymen.
Tributes pouring from all corners of Tanzania and neighbouring Kenya said the fallen leader was equally generous with his time, attention and counsel as he was looked up as symbolising the conscience of the society as a whole.
A requiem mass to honour the late former Prime Minister was led by the Archbishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Tanzania, Dr Alex Malasusa.
