President Samia Suluhu Hassan yesterday launched five high-technology tools worth 9.2bn/- for small-scale miners to help them play a critical role in the country’s mining industry.
The implements have been bought by the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO) to boost the contribution of the thousands of artisanal miners in revitalising the mining sector towards national income generation.
The machinery launch ceremony was held at the Jakaya Kikwete Conference Centre in the administrative capital, Dodoma, attracting various stakeholders engaged in the mining industry.
Once a sleeping giant as far as the mining sector is concerned, Tanzania is today the fourth largest gold producer in Africa after South Africa, Ghana and Mali and is the world’s sole producer of the precious stone Tanzanite.
