The paradox of road carnage involving school children is still haunting the northern Tanzania region of Arusha following the reported death of a pupil and the disappearance of seven others when their school vehicle plunged into Engosengiu gorge full of water early morning today.
The ghastly accident, which occurred at Dampo area in Sinoni ward, involved 11 pupils and two teachers of Ghati Memorial School when they were going to school, Arusha Regional Police Commander Justine Masejo confirmed.
The accident is reported to have involved a school vehicle with registration No. T 496 EFK.
SACP Masejo said three pupils and the school bus driver were rescued while others are feared to have been swept by the floods.
Eyewitnesses claim that the cause of the accident was the heavy rains which pounded the area leading to the flooding of the Engosengiu gorge which the driver is reported to have failed to detect.
In 2021, 30 school pupils and their teachers were also involved in a grisly accident when their vehicle plunged into a gorge near Karatu town.
