Prominent Rwandan government critic dies in US

By Lake Zone Watch & Agencies

Anne Rwigara, a 41-year-old Rwandan businesswoman and avowed critic of the government, who with her mother, Adeline Rwigara, spent a year in prison over allegations of tax evasion and electoral mal-practices, died on Thursday in the United States where she was living.

Anne, whose death was described by her mother as a “mystery”, was the daughter of a deceased famed Rwandan businessman, Assinapol Rwigara.

According to her mother, before she died, she had complained of stomach troubles.

Apart from entrepreneurship, the most interesting aspect of the Rwigara family is that in May 2017 Anne’s sister, Diane, announced she would challenge incumbent President Paul Kagame in the presidential poll.

However, the National Electoral commission later ruled that she wasn’t eligible for election as hundreds of signatures she submitted to justify her candidacy were forged.
