President Samia Suluhu Hassan yesterday congratulated Ghanaian president-elect John Dramani Mahama for his victory in the just-ended general election in his country.
The veteran Ghanaian politician previously served his country as president from July 24, 2012 to January 7, 2017 and Vice-President from January 2009 to July 2012.
In a brief congratulatory message sent to the Ghanaian new leader, President Samia said Tanzania will work together with Ghana in consolidating the existing ties between the two African countries.
Tanzania and Ghana trace their relations to the early days of independence when the founding fathers of the two nations, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere and Kwame Nkrumah, led the Africa’s liberation struggle against colonialism.
Mwalimu Nyerere and Dr Nkrumah, all avowed pan-Africanists, forged a strong unity to free Africa from foreign domination during the wind of political change in the 1950s.
“I extend my heartfelt congratulations on being entrusted with the Ghanaian people to lead them as president. I’m looking forward to strengthening the relations between our two countries for the benefit of both Tanzanians and Ghanaians,” President Samia’s message said.
