The recent death of a 26-year-old worker at North Mara Gold Mine, Emmanuel Chacha was not caused by a bullet as claimed earlier in the social media reports, the police force said today.
Tarime- Rorya Regional Police Commander (RPC), ACP Geoffrey Sarakikya said Emmanuel jumped to his death in a 20 metre – pit on March 11, 2023.
“From the postmortem given by the doctor who examined the body of the deceased (Emmanuel Chacha) at Bugando referral hospital in Mwanza, his death was caused by injuries sustained from the jump into a 20 metre – pit, “ the regional police chief told journalists at his office today.
He dismissed earlier reports on social media that claimed the deceased was shot dead.
“The reports that spread on social media claiming that the death of North Mara worker (Emannuel Chacha) occurred after being shot are not true, ” the RPC said.
The RPC had promised to issue an authentic report soon after the incident happened at one of the country’s largest gold mines, which is operated by Barrick Gold Corporation in partnership with the government of Tanzania through Twiga Minerals.
In his preliminary press briefing, the RPC said the deceased was found by security officials illegally digging gold sand before jumping into the pit at Gokona underground mining area.
