Under the spirit of political reconciliation whose main aim is to build a strong foundation for democratic political competition, the President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s government has in the past three years disbursed 2.7bn/- as subsidy to the opposition Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo — CHADEMA — , it has been revealed.

CHADEMA, according to the CCM Mainland Tanzania Vice-Chairman, Abdulrahman Kinana, had refused to accept the subsidy following the 2020 general election results but President Samia directed the government to disburse the money to protect the gains of the obtaining political environment in which reconciliation has become the catch phrase.

However, yesterday when speaking to CCM members in Dar es Salaam, Kinana was critical to CHADEMA leaders, saying despite President Samia’s gesture of goodwill and of creating a conducive atmosphere for political competition, “you’ll never hear them expressing the good things done to then during their platforms.”

All political parties with representatives at civic, parliamentary or presidential levels are entitled to subsidies from the government through the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.

The major goal of the money is to enable parties to carry out their political activities, including public rallies.
