Over 1,300 water projects set for completion countrywide

A total of 1,342 water projects will be completed nationwide during the current 2024/2025 financial year, government disclosed in parliament in Dodoma recently.

Tanzania is one of the leading African countries ready to attain the water-for-all projects that give people in need the access to clean drinking water and improved facilities for sanitation and hygiene.

Revealing statistics of water projects under implementation, Deputy Minister for Water, Kundo Mathew, said 1,095 schemes are being carried out in rural areas while 247 are in urban areas.

He said the aim of the government is to ensure that the provision of clean and safe drinking water reaches 85 per cent for rural dwellers and 95 per cent for the urban population by 2025/2026.

The government’s current strategy is to make sure that the needed funds for the ambitious water schemes are timely available to facilitate smooth supervision and implementation, the minister said.

Tanzania’s objective of the Water Sector Development Programme (WSDP) is to alleviate poverty improvements in the governance of water resources management and sustainable delivery of water supply and sanitation services.

The WSDP is national in scope, encompassing a wide variety of ecosystems and ecological conditions in the country.
