Police in Mwanza region have arrested a 52-year-old driver, Phillipo Mhina, allegedly for knocking to death a traffic police woman, identified as WP 3984 Sergeant Stella Alfonce while she was on duty.
The incident occurred yesterday morning at Nyamhongolo, along the Mwanza-Musoma road in Ilemela district. It involved a vehicle with registration No. T. 964 BRJ of Mitsubishi Rosa make, property of Nyamuge Primary School.
A statement issued by Mwanza Regional Police Commander SACP Wilbrod Mutafungwa said the deceased in company of fellow traffic police had stopped the said vehicle for routine inspection and found it had mechanical problems.
The statement said driver Phillipo Mhina, a resident of Nyasaka suburb in Mwanza city, was ordered to move his vehicle backwards for the safety of other road users. It was during the backward movement that he knocked the 49-year-old police woman to death, according to the statement.
“The police force in Mwanza region urge the public and drivers to adhere to traffic rules and to take extra care of the welfare of other road users to avoid road carnage,” concluded the statement.
