Musoma rural MP appeals for help to fishermen after Lake Victoria thunderstorm

Member of Parliament for Musoma Rural Constituency in Mara Region, Prof Sospeter Muhongo has appealed to well-wishers to come forward and offer help to a number of fishermen whose boats were destroyed by a recent storm on Lake Victoria.

According to media reports, thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rains and strong winds struck Lake Victoria on Monday (March 20, 2023) and caused destructions to more than 200 fishing boats resulting in a loss of millions of shillings.

‘’ The shores in Musoma Rural have been hit by a storm and fishermen’s canoes have been badly damaged, some beyond repair. They are in a dire need of assistance,’’ a statement from the office of Prof Muhongowas quoted by the media as saying.

It is estimated that one fishing canoe costs between Tanzania shillings  1.4m/- and 1.7m/-

The fishing areas that were hit hard are BwaiKumsoma, Busekera, Buira, and Kasoma.

Musoma District Commissioner Dr Khalfan Haule is coordinating the donation to the media reports .
