Works Minister, Innocent Bashungwa has directed the Tanzania-Roads Agency (TAN-ROADS) to immediately restore the damaged part of the Mtwara-Mingoyo-Masasi road where a bridge was yesterday swept by floods following heavy rains.
He gave the directive today in Masasi when he saw travellers stranded at Maili Mbili area, the scene of the damaged bridge.
Bashungwa was accompanied by Deputy Minister in the President’s Office responsible for Regional Administration and Local Government, Deogratis Ndejembi.
“I order TAN-ROADS to construct an alternative route within three hours to allow passage of vehicles with their stranded travellers while other means are sought to repair the damaged section of the road,” he directed.
The minister said President Samia Suluhu Hassan has already set aside funds for the upgrade of the 200-km Mtwara-Mingoyo-Masasi to tarmac level as a contractor is being sought.
He said the ministry has received directives from the President that the contractor should be available by June this year to begin the road project.
