BARRICK North Mara Goldmine has won credit for encouraging nearby communities to test their health status as a response to tame the scourge of HIV-AIDS.
In marking the global AIDS Day yesterday at Nyamwaga village, hundreds of people stood in silent queues to voluntarily wait for their turns in HIV testing; a response to the theme that “Tarime without new HIV infections is possible.”
The goldmine won government approval for its participation and sponsorship of different activities in commemorating the day, and was described by the Tarime District Council Executive Director’s office as a key stakeholder who contributed moral and material support to ensure the success of the 2023 event.
Speaking yesterday at the climax of the celebrations whose global theme was “Let Communities Lead The Way”, guest of honour Tarime District Commissioner Colonel Michael Mtenjele paid glowing tribute to North Mara Goldmine’s role in supporting community activities in various key sectors of the national economy.
His praise won support from AIDS coordinator, Dr Joel Mubala, who also said: “Barrick have not only participated in the sponsorship and coordination of various activities in marking this event, but also they are collaborating with the district health department in propagating education to the communities on the prevention of the spread of the Human Immune Virus that causes AIDS.”
On his part, Barrick North Mara Community Relations Manager, Francis Uhadi, said HIV testing is one of the major campaigns given priority to workers of the goldmine. “Good health is a major capital in our activities,” he explained.
