Mara RC wants vibrant media, warns officials hiding information

Mara Regional Commissioner (RC) Col. Evans Mtambi has warned his subordinates, including District Council Executive Directors (DEDs) and District Commissioners (DCs) against mistreating journalists, whom he said must be given cooperation in order to report stories that would help speed up social and economic development in the region.

“As the RC, I direct all government officials to cooperate with media houses and work closely with journalists,” the regional chief stressed in Musoma, the capital of Mara region yesterday.

Col. Mtambi also cautioned officials who do not show case development activities being undertaken by the sixth phase government of President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration.

“President Samia is doing great things in Mara region but you are hiding the information, who are you? You are betraying the President,’’ the RC further warned.

Besides numerous social and economic development projects, Col, Mtambi said the government has been disbursing billions of shillings to finance implementation of mega strategic projects in the Lake Zone regions.

The projects include construction of Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere University of Agriculture and Technology, Kwangwa Referral Hospital, expansion of Musoma airport and several tarmac roads to mention just a few.

Thus, the RC said, without a vibrant media, the region cannot easily achieve its development goals.

The RC was speaking during the 2024 Press Freedom Day, hosted by Mara Regional Press Club (MRPC).

He reminded the journalists to observe professionalism and media ethics.
“There is no freedom without bounderies.”
