The Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) has sent a condolence message to families and relatives, following the deaths of 14 people who perished after two canoes they were travelling in capsized in Lake Victoria, Mara Region last Sunday.

In a tweet published on its website, LVBC said: “Executive Secretary and Management join families, friends and relatives in mourning those who perished in the recent boat tragedy in Lake Victoria, Bunda District in the United Republic of Tanzania.”

Up until yesterday, a rescue team sent to the accident area had managed to recover all bodies, according to officials.

Earlier, Tanzania President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan also sent a message of condolences to families who lost their loved ones in the accident, through Mara Regional Commissioner (RC) Said Mtanda.

The government will help families and relatives meet burial costs, RC Mtanda said.

The victims of the accident, majority of whom were school children, were reportedly coming from a church service on Mchigondo Island in Bunda district.
