A marauding leopard is reported to have killed 34 goats and sheep at Robanda village in Serengeti district, Mara region.

The incident has elicited the ire of the villagers as the worst major historical event to have occurred in the area for a carnivorous animal to have killed such a huge number of livestock at once.

So far, it is not known where the fast-running wild cat came from as Robanda village is surrounded by the Ikorongo and Grumeti game reserves and the Serengeti National Park.

Robanda village executive committee chairman, Mrobanda Japan, told a media outlet that the incident occurred at 8:00 p.m. on March 16 when the leopard raided the village devouring and sucking blood of its preys.

“It was a sad event to remember for a huge number of animals to be killed at once,” he said.

A conservationist and ecologist at Ikorongo and Grumeti game reserves, Lasco Francis Chuwa, said it was difficult for Robanda village to avoid such happenings because of its location at the heart of conservation areas.

He said in this season of the year carnivorous animals such as leopards, cheetahs, lions and hyenas wander from place to place in search of their preys as herbivorous animals normally avoid tall grass.
