Four government institutions axed, 16 others merged

The Government has struck off four parastatals and institutions from the list of its organizations and merged 16 others in an exercise aimed at improving productivity and efficiency.

Announcing the drastic changes, Minister of State in the President’s Office, Planning and Investment, Prof Kitilla Mkumbo, said the Tea Research Institute, Tobacco Research and Coffee Research ( TACRI) will now be part of the Tanzania Research Institute ( TARI).

The National Identification Authority( NIDA) now forms one institution in a merger with Registration Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA).

Other mergers according to Prof. Mkumbo are; the Tanzania Agricultural Development Bank (TADB) which becomes one institution with the Agricultural Inputs Trust Fund (AGITF), The Tea Board and Small scale Tea Farmers Agency become one agency, while the Meat Board and Milk Board form one board. SIDO, Tanzania Engineering and Manufacturing Design (TEMDO) and Centre of Agricultural Mechanization and Rural Technologies (CAMARTEC) will now be one institution.

Prof Mkumbo said the Tanzania Investment Centre ( TIC) and the Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) become one institution to facilitate foreign investment.

The parastatals that have been axed are; Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre, The Tanzania Police Force Corporation Sole (TPFCS), Kibaha Education Centre and the Tanzania Pyrethrum Board .

Minister Mkumbo allayed fears of possible retrenchment of staff saying while the restructuring of government institutions is an on-going exercise, nobody will lose their job.
