Tarime rural District Councillors have approved 9bn/- from Barrick North Mara Gold Mine for community social responsibility (CSR) funding of various development projects in the area.

The councillors made the endorsement of the expenditure at a meeting held at Nyamwaga village yesterday, and attended by Tarime Rural Member of Parliament Mwita Waitara and the chairman of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi(CCM, Marwa Daud Ngicho among other officials.

Priority for expenditure will go to procurement of desks for primary and secondary schools to ease the current shortage, according to the decision of the councillors.

The Tarime District Council Chairman, Simon Kiles, said 60 per cent of the CSR money will be directed to 77 villages while 40 per cent will be given to villages surrounding the North Mara Gold Mine.

Tarime District Council Executive Director (DED), Solomon Shati, told the meeting that primary and secondary schools in the area need 11,000 and 8,000 desks respectively to ease the existing shortage.

He said implementation of CSR projects since the CSR funding programme was launched in the district in 2019/2020 has been increasing each passing day through close cooperation with the North Mara Gold Mine authorities.

On his part, Barrick North Mara Gold Mine Community Relations Manager, Francis Uhadi, appealed to the councillors in their respective wards to help in ending intrusions at the gold mine.

He said the presence of the mine was of much benefit to the people not only through the CSR money but also as an employment creator.
