The Police Force in Dar es Salaam’s Kariakoo district has sanctioned the opposition Chama Cha Maendeleo na Demokrasia (CHADEMA) to stage its planned demonstration tomorrow as a response to the latter’s request contained in a letter of January 16.
A brief letter despatched to CHADEMA authorities today by the Kariakoo District Commander, SSP J.E Joseph, said “according to the law, regulations and procedures governing demonstrations, the Police Force will not prevent such happenings if there won’t be any breach of peace or the occurrence of criminal acts.”
The letter placed the burden on CHADEMA leaders and members to avoid the use offensive language that may lead to acts of breaking the law.
“You’ll be obliged to follow all legal procedures in various places you’ll pass through as police will direct you to reach your chosen destination as per your request,” the letter said.
The Police Force strictly warned the demonstrators against engaging in any acts breach of violence, stealing from innocent people and hooliganism contrary to the goals of the planned peaceful demonstration.
CHADEMA authorities wrote to the Police Force on January 16 seeking to organise a demonstration on laws to be tabled before parliament governing elections.
