Biteko : Increasing power demand requires alternative production sources

Deputy Prime Minister who is also Minister for Energy Dr Doto Biteko has said the government is implementing new electricity production projects with the aim of avoiding reliance on old sources, in a bid to cope with increasing power demand.


The minister made the remarks in Dodoma yesterday shortly after presiding over the signing of an agreement for Malagarasi River hydropower generation, between TANESCO and a Chinese company, Dongfang International.


“ We must get new power production sources. While the demand is high, our sources have remained the same over the years,” said Dr Biteko, hinting that the new plant on Malagarasi River in Kigoma Region will have capacity to generate 49.5 megawatts on completion, which is expected to take three and a half years.
