Bashungwa vows to tackle challenges facing home ministry

Newly-appointed home affairs minister Innocent Bashungwa yesterday promised to tackle challenges facing his ministry by holding regular meetings with various top departmental heads and units.

He said in Zanzibar after being sworn-in that he would strive to study reports of work performance, learn from achievements and failures, and formulate strategies to ensure the ministry achievves its set targets.

On Sunday President Samia Suluhu Hassan moved Bashungwa from the ministry of works to the home affairs ministry in a mini-cabinet reshuffle.

The interior ministry combines such key departments as the police force, the prisons and immigration.

“I’ll have the opportunity to meet with you and review our achievements, challenges and the ongoing efforts to tackle the challenges facing the ministry as a whole,” the minister said.

Welcoming the new minister, deputy home affairs minister Daniel Sillo said the ministry’s vision is to ensure peace and tranguility reins in the country with public observance of the rule of law.

The home ministry is specifically charged with protection of the public and their property,, reform of prisoners, immigration and refugee protection, among ither issues.
