Barrick North Mara moves to protect its workers against Hepatitis B infections

Barrick North Mara Gold Mine workers have every reason to be happy, following the mining company’s month-long awareness campaign on how they should stay free from Hepatitis B infections.

The world marks Hepatitis Day on July 28 every year as part of the global efforts to create awareness against the liver disease.

The gold mine’s campaign was concluded on Saturday with a jubilation that involved a special tournament of various sports competitions among the workers.

The tournament saw the workers’ teams actively participating in matches such as basketball, football, relays and chicken chasing among others.

The colourful event was graced by North Mara Gold Mine, General Manager (GM), Mr Apolinary Lyambiko.

Mr Lyambiko appealed to the workers to turn up and get anti- hepatitis B virus related services, like checkup and vaccination at the goldmine, which is located in the famous area of Nyamongo in Tarime district, Mara region.

According to medical experts, hepatitis B which is transmitted by contact with bodily fluids such as blood or semen of a person who has the infection, can cause liver damage or liver cancer.
