Barrick Gold North Mara has hosted the climax of Sixteen Days of Activism against Gender Based Violence (GBV) at Nyamongo Secondary School in Tarime District yesterday, and seized the opportunity to launch Friends of North Mara clubs at 10 secondary schools in villages surrounding the gold mine.

Presiding over the celebrations, Acting Mara Regional Commissioner, Dr Yahaya Nawanda commended Barrick North Mara for supporting the campaign and urged the police to ensure all perpetrators of GBV, that includes FGM are apprehended and charged before the court of law. “FGM has no room in today’s world,’’ said Dr Nawanda.

The Director of Gender in the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Badru Abdunuru said the government will continue to invest in the fight against GBV, and praised North Mara and other organizations for supporting the campaign, a move she noted, will clearly give it a fresh impetus.

Barrick North Mara General Manager, Apolinary Lyambiko said the gold mine values the government’s efforts in the fight against GBV and has thus resolved to throw its weight behind the campaign.

Tarime District Commissioner Col. Michael Mntenjele appealed to all coordinators of the campaign against GBV to create a base in the district for next year in order to help stamp out the practice saying it has been a cultural norm in the Kurya community since time immemorial.

Earlier, WILDAF Director Anna Kulaya, the coordinator of the 16 Days of Activism against GBV, thanked Barrick North Mara and other stakeholders for supporting the campaign .

“We sincerely thank North Mara for their immeasurable support. The gold mine has invested heavily in the campaign against GBV and the newly formed Friends of North Mara clubs will be inspirational to campaigners in areas surrounding the mine,’’ said Kulaya.

A representative from the US Embassy in Dar es Salaam Jeanne Clark said the cimax of the celebrations significantly coincided with the 75th anniversary of the UN’s Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
