Pope Francis on Saturday created former coadjutor archbishop of Tabora Protase Rugambwa as Tanzania’s second cardinal elector. The other is the 79-year-old Cardinal Polycarp Pengo.
The new Tanzanian cardinal is one of three Africans who joined the College of Cardinals on Saturday
Before his elevation, Cardinal Rugambwa, whose parents gave him the surname in honour of the country’s first Cardinal Laurean Rugambwa, had spent 10 years of service in the Holy See
He was ordained to priesthood on September 1, 1990, during the visit of Pope Paul II to Tanzania.
