14 persons feared dead as canoes overturn in Lake Victoria

Fourteen people are feared to have died in Mara region after two canoes they were travelling in the Lake Victoria waters capsized yesterday evening.

The victims were coming from a church service in Mchigondo Island in Bunda district, reports from the accident scene say.

They say the two canoes overturned following heavy storms in Africa’s largest fresh water lake.

Mara Regional Commissioner, Saidi Mtanda confirmed the reports, saying 13 people, who include a child believed to be one-year-old, were saved while other 14 persons are feared dead.

Bunda District Commissioner Dr. Vincent Anney today morning visited the scene of the accident to make a follow-up of on-going rescue operations, according to the Regional Commissioner.
