Eleven workers of the Morogoro-based Mtibwa sugar factory have died while two others have been admitted into a hospital following an electrical blast which occurred at 1.30 A.M. today, it has been disclosed.
The giant Mtibwa factory is located in Mvomero district, and apart from producing sugar, it owns large farms of sugarcane plantations.
Morogoro Regional Police Commander, SACP Alex Mkama, said the dead persons, who include three nationals of Kenya, Brazil and India, were electrical and mechanical engineers stationed in the factory’s control room.
He said the bodies of the deceased have been preserved at the Mtibwa Sugar hospitals while the two injured persons are receiving medical treatment at the Bwagala Mission Hospital at Turiani town.
Mtibwa factory traces its background in 1970 when extensive sugar plantations were established in a low-lying land overlooking the sprawling Eastern Arc Nguu Mountains.
